People see different things in babies. Mum's eyes, Dad's smile, Aunty Sally's dimples, humans are predisposed to look for familiarity when accepting something new.
Weanling buyers didn't have to look too hard, nor did they have to convince themselves that the progeny of the brilliant Gold Trip would fit right into Australian stables. Although from a family steeped in European quality, Goldie's sons and daughters have plenty of Aussie power where it counts - behind the saddle.
"It has been common feedback from buyers for sure, I've seen that bum somewhere else, and that somewhere is on Exceed And Excel," said Lovatsville founder Sam White.
"Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Most of Gold Trip's stock have that familiar Australian back end, very much through the hindquarter and hock, it's Exceed And Excel coming through strongly."
Shrewd trainers the likes of Cindy Alderson, Archie Alexander, and David Jolly agree, and have bought foals, mares in foals and have bred to the horse. Group 1 winning trainer Paul Preusker was so impressed by Gold Trip progeny that he bred two of his own mares to the stallion in 2025.
The standard of foal produced by Gold Trip so far only strengthens his Australian trainer Ciaron Maher's resolve to seek out the best yearlings by the stallion in 2027.
"You're talking about your So You Think's, he (Gold trip) is of that sort of ilk," said Maher.
"This is a topliner. I will be chasing the best of them at the sales for sure."
An extremely fertile stallion, Gold Trip will be represented by a select but high-quality group of yearlings at the 2027 sales.
The likeness to Exceed And Excel in his progeny has prompted breeders to look towards successful nicks that the sire line has enjoyed in Australia. There is no need to reinvent the wheel with Gold Trip, the path to the winner's circle is proven and well worn.
Elusive Quality mares under the Exceed And Excel sire line have produced stakes winners at a whopping 7.45% SW/R, including Group 1 winners Guelph, Bivouac, and Mischief Magic.
Exceed And Excel over Street Cry line mares has been exceptionally potent, with eight stakes winners including three Group 1 winners, Beiwacht, September Run and Cylinder.
Mares from Lonhro's line have produced 15 stakes winners under Exceed And Excel including Group 1 winners Golden Mile and recent Queensland Oaks winner Fireball Miss. Another 15 stakes winners have when Encosta De Lago mares have been bred to the Exceed And Excel line.
In fact, Exceed And Excel works with pretty much anything in Australia, or around the world for that matter. He has stakes winners over, Galileo, More Than Ready, Savabeel, Shamardal, Rubiton, Snippets, Singspiel, Canny Lad, Thorn Park, the list goes on.
He might have won a Melbourne Cup, but this is a pedigree with plenty of room to move. Genetically measured as a miler-middle distance performer by Equinome, Gold Trip shapes as a surprise packet stallion, a stallion to bank now and appreciate interest over the next 18-months.
