Although lost to the sport before the 2025 breeding season, the legacy of former four-time Australian Champion Stallion Snitzel is destined to be carried forward by his sire sons. 

Shamus Award, Russian Revolution, Trapeze Artist, Wild Ruler are Snitzel sons that have left their mark at stud, and more recently New Zealand based Sword Of State has joined that list.

There are in fact, some undeniable comparisons to be made between Sword Of State and Generation, perhaps indicators of the success that lies ahead for the young Lovatsville bull.

Both stallions are of course by Snitzel, and both carry their sire's physical strength and power. Short coupled, strong, and sharp, both have bodies built for speed. Generation is by the brilliant multiple stakes winning juvenile Fontiton, while Sword Of State's dam In The Vanguard was a debut winner at two and Group placed.

Ciaron Maher went to $575,000 to buy Generation at the 2020 Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale, David Ellis went to $600,000 to buy Sword Of State at the very same sale.

Both were lightning fast two-year-olds, Generation unbeaten in two metropolitan starts while Sword Of State won four of his five two-year-old starts including the Group 1 Sistema Stakes.

Generation trained on at three, winning the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes and finishing on the heels of Australia's best sprinters when a close fourth in the Group 1 Manikato and Group 1 Moir Stakes, matching it with the likes of Group 1 stars Bella Nippotina, Coolangatta, Rothfire, and September Run.

Sword Of State also trained on to win at Group 3 level at three, but his best Group 1 result that season was 13th in the Coolmore Stud Stakes behind Home Affairs.

While Sword Of State was retired at the end of his three-year-old season, Generation trained on and continued to test the likes of Asfoora and Imperatriz in high quality Group races in Australia.

With a head start at stud Sword Of State has hit the ground running with precocious early types the likes of Warwoven, sensationally scratched as favourite for the Magic Millions 2yo Classic, Debutant Stakes winner and Karaka Millions placegetter Torture.

Convinced yet? Well, if the comparisons are anything to go by, supporters of Generation might be in for a real boon if Sword Of State's trajectory is anything to go by. Initially offered at NZ$15,000, Sword Of State's fee has climbed to NZ$50,000 in 2026.

Generation, a horse undeniably similar on many scorecards, stands at $6600 inc GST in 2026. As they say, there's a dollar to be had by supporting Generation this season.

Breeders looking to reduce their risk even further should consider sending a daughter, or granddaughter, of Written Tycoon to Generation if early black type statistics are any guide to the future.

Although Written Tycoon has had only moderate success statistically as a broodmare sire with 13 stakes winners at a SW/R ratio of 3.3%, his SW/R ratio more than doubles with a Snitzel line stallion over the top, leaping to 7.32%.

Outstanding Tasmanian filly Sanniya, and stakes winners Snitzel Dancer and Foreign Press are leading the charge with some very exciting new season two-year-olds also carrying the cross.

If there's such a thing as a match made in heaven, maybe Snitzel and Written Tycoon is it.

Put Written Tycoon over Snitzel mares and you get a similar result, with 8.23% SW/R, more than double Snitzel's ratio as a broodmare sire, including Caulfield Guineas winner Private Life and Group 1 winners Velocious and Captured By Love.
